Office DIY: Gold Scissors and Gold Pencils for $1!

I don't know about you, but I LOVE fun office supplies. Heading into Staples or the Target Office Supply area is BAD NEWS for my shopping bug. There's just something about having pretty pens or shiny scissors that makes it "fun" to work.

This summer I kept seeing so many gold office supply items around and they definitely inspired me. See examples below.

Since I was really into Gold Spray Paint this summer (see here), I decided I would try my hand at making some Gold Office supplies of my own.

Gold Mechanical Pencils

Materials Needed:

  • Dollar Store Mechanical Pencils
  • Spray Primer (I like this
  • Metallic Gold Spray Paint (I like this

Directions:

  1. Take the Dollar Store Mechanical Pencils and remove the erasers.
  2. Spray the pencils with spray primer in 2 sessions. After the first spray has dried, slightly shift the pencil clip so that you can spray behind the clip. Make sure to read the directions on your primer for how long the pencils need to dry before applying a top coat.
  3. Spray pencils with a Gold Metallic Spray paint in 2 sessions, as above. This is so that if you move the clip on the pencil, there will not be an ugly un-sprayed spot. Make sure to read the directions for the amount of time the pencils need to dry before moving.

Gold Scissors

Materials Needed:

Directions:

  1. Tape up scissors. See Picture above.
  2. Spray with primer and let dry according to instructions on can. Turn over and spray the other side.
  3. Spray with Metallic Gold paint and let dry to touch (see instructions on the can). Spray the other side. When paint is safe to touch on the second side, remove the tape. This helps keep a clean line rather than having the paint pull up with the tape once the paint is dry.
  4. Make sure to wait until paint is completely dry (the can will say how long this is) and then re-tape around the little knob in the middle and spray with metallic paint.

Voila! Cute little office supplies. I have been using the pencils non-stop and so far there haven't been any scratches! I will let you know how well the scissors hold up!

What kinds of office supplies do you get excited about?
