The Difficulty of Painted Nails
I know you're not supposed to compare yourself to others but as a blogger it was hard not to. I kept shying away from shots of my hands and jewelry because my nails would "ruin" the shot. Either they were not painted or, if they were, they were smudged and chipped in places. Am I the only one who struggles with painted nails? I apply base coat, use a good nail polish, apply a top coat, and let them dry up to an hour and still find at least one or two nails on each hand smudged by the next morning. Do you have a secret that I do not on how to keep my nails from smudging within an hour of painting them? If so, please let me know in the comments below! My painted nails rarely last more than 4 days and take so much time to paint that in the end it just never seems worth the effort.Jamberry: The Solution to Painted Nails Problems
Since I can't afford to get my nails done every week (and I will say, even when I get them professionally done they rarely last longer than 5 days!), I finally decided to check out Jamberry. My husband was concerned that they would ruin my nail bed but what I discovered was that they actually protect them! (If you're interested, you can find the video I watched here.) I contacted my friend Emily and she sent me some samples to try! These samples were provided to me but the review is my own impression of the product! What I learned:
The first set of nails that I tried were not my favorite. Much of this had to do with the thickness of the nail wrap and my own misunderstanding about how to apply them. The second set I tried I liked much better!1. Application is key. When I applied the first set, I followed the paper instructions sent with the nails and made some key mistakes.
- I did not cut them in half before I heated and applied the nail wraps.
- I touched the back of the nail wrap when I grabbed them to place them on the nail.
- I filed the nail off incorrectly.
To avoid the mistakes I made, follow the application steps in this video:
2. The finish matters. According to Emily, there are 7 different finishes and the the metallic, satin, sparkle, and luster are a little thicker. I tried these and I felt like the thicker finish didn't file off as easily. My nails kept getting caught on my sweater or in my hair, etc. The second pair I tried I had better luck. These had a shinier finish which made them go on and file off much smoother. I couldn't find them on the website for you but they are likely a "regular" finish.
3. Use recommended tools. I found that the nail file Emily included and the rubber cuticle pusher were essential to making sure the nail wrap adhered properly to the nail bed. I used the orange stick to pull the nail wrap from the sheet and apply to the nail. This worked much better than my first attempt with my fingers! So, if you plan on using Jamberry nails frequently, I would definitely recommend investing in this application kit. The nail file I had at home didn't have enough grit to file off the nail wrap and as I learned from my first attempt, if that isn't done properly, the nail will catch on hair and clothes.
4. Jamberry nails last longer than painted nails and take less time to apply. Since I am new to application and I wanted to get the nail wraps to fit just right, it did take me at least 15-20 minutes to apply. However, this is much less time than it takes me to paint my nails and after application is complete, I can go ahead and do things that I couldn't do with wet nails. The first set lasted me only about a week (due to application issues) but the second set lasted me about 10 days.
Assessment of Jamberry Nails
Pros:- Nail wraps last much longer than painted nails on me.
- Application is quicker than regular painted nails.
- Nail wraps look professional for less money than getting nails professionally done.
- Each set comes with enough wraps for 2 manicures! (You can also use the extras to accent other sets!)
- After application I don't have to wait for the nail to dry
- You can mix and match colors and patterns for fun, artistic flare or add a pretty pattern to one nail while keeping the rest painted with your favorite liquid polish.
Cons:
- Near the end of their wear, the nail wraps started to pull up around the cuticle. This made my hair get constantly caught in the nail wrap. When I ran my hand through my hair, hair would get caught under the pulled up edges and pull the nail wrap up more. To keep this from happening, try this method!
- Most of the nail wraps are around $15. This is more expensive than nail polish unless you can buy them with a special deal.
- Depending on the nail wrap and the application, the nail wraps can have rough edges that get caught on fabric. (This is why it is important to have a good application)
- I had to be very careful (even shortly after application) when shampooing my hair, as hair could get caught up under the nail wrap, pulling up the edges.
Overall, I believe these are a great investment! Jamberry seems to run deals frequently, which lowers the cost of the nail wrap, and it's an easy way for working women to feel and look professional.
